The Core Competencies are key intellectual, personal, and social-emotional skills outlined in our BC curriculum.

These competencies help students develop lifelong learning habits and are an essential part of BC’s assessment system. By building a strong foundation in these areas, students can “engage in deep, lifelong learning”, and gain the confidence and skills needed to navigate both their education and personal growth.
At LAB (Language Arts Base) Art Studios, we've been integrating these Core Competencies into our classes, camps, and programs to create a rich and supportive learning environment!
Communication & Collaboration
Art is a powerful way to express ideas, and at LAB, we encourage students to communicate their thoughts and inspirations. Through discussions with peers and instructors, students learn to explain the process, materials, and meaning behind their work. This strengthens their ability to articulate ideas, expand vocabulary, and build confidence in self-expression. Working in a collaborative setting also teaches students to listen, share feedback, and support one another—valuable skills that extend beyond the studio.
Critical & Creative Thinking
Problem-solving is at the heart of artistic exploration. Our instructors challenge students to think critically by encouraging them to experiment with new materials and adapt to unexpected changes in their projects. When faced with a creative challenge—like fixing a mistake or exploring a new technique—students develop resilience and independence in their artistic decision-making. To promote creative thinking, our studios love creating new experiences for our students, such as providing them with the option to incorporate multiple mediums or art materials into their work and/or exposing them to different artists and styles which can inspire them in their own artistic journeys.

Personal & Social Growth
At LAB, we celebrate diversity by integrating cultural themes into our activities, helping students learn about different backgrounds and artistic traditions. We also encourage personal expression through projects like self-portraits or artwork inspired by family and friends. Setting artistic goals teaches responsibility and perseverance - whether it's completing a painting section or sculpting a clay figure by the end of class.
Since many of our programs are group-based, students naturally develop social skills by working together in a supportive setting. We start by introducing everyone by name to create a welcoming atmosphere, helping students build friendships beyond their school circles and connect with others through their shared love of art.
Join Our Creative Community!
If your child could benefit from strengthening these skills -or if you simply want to nurture their creativity- LAB is the perfect place to start! We would love to meet you, and help your child(ren) grow in their learning journey while welcoming them to our fun and artistic community!
