Let's make the start of July super bold and colourful!
Introduce your young artist to the electrifying world of Favourite Fauvists at our second week of our summer camp program, specially tailored for kids aged 3 to 15.
This theme runs from July 1st to July 5th in the scenic areas of Steveston Richmond, Kerrisdale, and Point Grey in Vancouver. Our camp offers a vibrant week of artistic exploration, inspired by the revolutionary Fauvist movement that prioritized bold colours and strong forms.
Celebrating Fauvism: A Journey Through Color and Expression
Fauvism, an early twentieth-century art movement led by figures like Henri Matisse, André Derain, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque and Maurice de Vlaminck celebrated vibrant colors and wild brush strokes. Our camp aims to channel the Fauvists' spirit, who broke away from traditional forms and unleashed an explosion of pure colour to express emotions vividly and energetically. Here’s how we bring their groundbreaking techniques to life for our students:
Painting Studies: Following the Fauvists' example, students will use colours boldly and expressively to communicate feelings and impressions, rather than to reproduce reality. This allows for personal expression and the development of each child's unique artistic voice.
Sculpture Hand-Building: Emulating the Fauvists’ interest in simplifying forms to their essentials, children will create abstract sculptures. These activities encourage an innovative approach to traditional materials and methods, mirroring the Fauvists’ experimental nature.
Fine Arts Drawing Techniques: Our drawing sessions will emphasize the Fauvists' use of exaggerated, non-naturalistic colours and simplified forms. Kids will explore how to make the familiar extraordinary, transforming everyday scenes into vibrant expressions of their perspectives.
Textile/Multimedia Arts: Just as the Fauvists mixed paints to create dazzling new hues, our campers will combine various materials such as wools and fabrics to craft multimedia art. This fusion of textures and colours will inspire kids to think outside the traditional artistic confines.
Science and Art Exploration: Understanding the science behind the Fauvists' choice of colours, such as why certain colours appear more vibrant and how they affect viewers emotionally, will be part of the curriculum. These lessons bridge art with scientific inquiry, deepening the campers' appreciation of both fields.
Creative Story Writing and Reading: Drawing inspiration from Fauvist artworks, which often evoke stories through their dramatic scenes, children will write and share their own narratives. This helps develop their writing skills and their ability to interpret visual cues into storytelling.
