Get ready to shift your view to create lots of fun illusions this summer!
During the week of July 8th to July 12th, young artists aged 3 to 15 are invited to delve into the fascinating world of artistic Perspective at our summer camp located in the picturesque neighbourhoods of Steveston Richmond, Kerrisdale, and Point Grey in Vancouver.
Our third week of our camp program focuses on refining the crucial skill from 1-point perspectives to 3D drawings, enhancing both creativity and technical ability through a variety of engaging and educational activities inspired by artists such as: Rembrandt, M.C. Esher and Patrick Hughes.
A New Dimension of Artistic Skill
At our perspective-focused camp, students will explore various dimensions of visual art, learning to see and render the world in ways they never have before. Topics of the week include: Patrick Hughes' Reverse Perspectives, Vincent van Gogh's 'Vanishing Point' paintings, MC Escher's Optical Illusions, Filippo Brunelleschi's Linear Perspectives and Rembrandt's 'Depth' artworks. Here’s what we have lined up for our students:
Painting Studies: We will learn about linear and aerial perspective, using these techniques to create paintings that offer depth and realism. They will understand how to manipulate colour, light, and scale to depict three-dimensional spaces on a two-dimensional canvas.
Sculpture Hand-Building: In sculpture sessions, students will apply their knowledge of perspective to create sculptures that play with viewer perception from different angles. This hands-on approach helps solidify their understanding of dimensions and space.
Fine Arts Drawing Techniques: Drawing will focus heavily on constructing scenes with accurate perspective, teaching techniques like vanishing points and horizon lines. Whether drawing from imagination or real life, campers will enhance their ability to produce lifelike and proportionally accurate drawings.
Textile/Multimedia Arts: Integrating perspective with textile and multimedia arts, children will work on projects that require them to think about how texture, pattern, and form contribute to the perception of depth and space in art.
Science and Art Exploration: Campers will engage in experiments and projects that reveal the science behind optical illusions and visual perceptions, understanding how the human eye interprets artistic elements like perspective.
Creative Story Writing and Reading: Understanding perspective isn’t just visual; it’s narrative. In our reading and writing sessions, kids will craft stories that explore different characters’ perspectives, enhancing their empathy and narrative skills.
