New Weekly Class Theme: Fruit Faces and Food Circus with Giuseppe Arcimboldo @ LAB Art Studios Vancouver

Writer's picture: LAB Language Arts BaseLAB Language Arts Base

Join us this March and April as we explore the creative paintings by Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo! Over 400 years ago Arcimboldo broke the mold of typical, realistic, renaissance era paintings and created portraits depicting figures made up of fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers or books.

LAB Art Studio March 2025 Theme: Arcimboldo Fruit Faces

Step right up, young artists! This spring, LAB Art Studios invites your child to join the Food Circus, a whimsical world where fruits, veggies, and creativity collide to create a vibrant circus of characters. We'll focus on Self Portraits using still-life objects and then make our way into crafting scenes with playful circus performers—like clowns, acrobats, and ringmasters—all made from delicious fruits and veggies, set against a colourful circus backdrop.

LAB Art Studio April 2025 Theme: Arcimboldo Food Circus

Circus Fun with Fruits and Veggies

In our exciting, hands-on classes, students will jump to create their own circus performers using fruits, vegetables, and other materials. Imagine a juggling clown made of oranges, a ringmaster with a cucumber bowtie, or a high-flying acrobat made from apples and carrots! The possibilities are endless, and the fun is guaranteed.

Each child will learn how to arrange and paint fruits and veggies into circus characters while designing a fun, circus-inspired backdrop. With a mix of food and imagination, this class will ignite your child’s creativity in the most deliciously fun way!

About the Artist

While this theme isn’t based on a single artist, it takes inspiration from the playful spirit of artists like Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who famously created faces and figures from fruits, flowers, and vegetables. His imaginative approach to using everyday objects in art paved the way for LAB Art Studio's modern twist of transforming food into fantastic circus performers!

Fun Facts About Fruits & Veggies in Art

• Did you know food has been used in art for centuries? Arcimboldo turned food into faces, and now, we’re turning it into lively circus characters!

• Fruits and veggies aren’t just for eating—they’re perfect for sculpting and painting, helping kids explore textures, shapes, and colours in a fun and interactive way!

• Many artists are inspired by the world around them, and what better inspiration than food—something we all know and love?

Students will get hands-on with various exciting mediums to bring their circus characters to life, including:

Watercolour Painting: Kids will paint vibrant, food-themed backgrounds and bring their fruity and veggie characters to life using watercolour techniques.

Sculpture: Using real fruits and vegetables, as well as clay and other materials, students will craft 3D circus performers like clowns, acrobats, and ringmasters!

Collage Art: Students will create lively circus scenes using cut-out fruits and veggies, adding texture and layers to their artwork.

Pencil Drawing: With pencils, markers, and pastels, students will sketch their characters and bring their circus creations to life.

Digital Art: Young artists will also have the chance to create digital food circus characters, experimenting with colour and design in a virtual medium.
